TOUR A COVERED:

3 ISLANDS IN 1 DAY:

BOHEYDULANG, MANTABUAN & SIBUAN ISLAND:

BOHEYDULANG ISLAND:
The Gaya Island Group [BoheyDulang] consists of 3 steep islands separated by narrow, shallow channels that form the left overs of a long extinct volcano with the rest of the crater being submerged as a shallow reef. The island group used to be home of a Japanese pearl farm and left overs are still visible on one of the islands and at several spots underwater. The shallow rim to the south has some excellent coral growth which, according to well known marine biologist Dr. Natalie Wood, easily outnumbers the species found at the Great Barrier Reef. There is a very large number of small but rare fish that can be found here at depths ranging from 1m to 20m. Larger fish like eagle rays and trevally can be found at the northern side of the island group in the channel towards Mantabuan.

MANTABUAN ISLAND:
Mantabuan Island, located behind the ancient volcano of BoheyDulang, is approximately 40 minutes away from Semporna. The Black Coral Forest, its best dive site, is located at the end of a gentle slope at a depth of 25m-30m. Huge bushes of the precious coral can be found there, ranging in colour from white to neon green to purple. Turtles are frequently seen resting there, and eagle rays can be seen overhead when the current picks up. The massive coral boulders at shallower depths are ideal for looking for lobsters, frogfish, and a wide variety of other coral fish. Some of the best soft coral and large table coral can be found at nearby Mantabuan 2, an underwater mountain that rises from 60m to a depth of 10m below the surface, often with nurse sharks or blue spotted stingrays resting beneath. Dive sites further North and West of the island, on the other hand, are excellent for spotting Turtles, Barracudas, and a variety of smaller critters.

SIBUAN ISLAND:
Sibuan Island, locally known as 'Battleship Island' for it‘s extinctive shape, is located app. 30 mins by speed boat from Semporna. Sibuan is one of the smallest islands in the whole bay but it is very popular for swimmers and snorkelers and certainly the most photographed island after Sipadan. Sibuan Island got a gentle falling, white sandy beach that is perfect for swimmers and non swimmers alike, someone can play in the shallows without being worried about stepping on any sharp coral. Further outside, at the drop off, there are beautiful coral formations to discover with plenty of fish hiding in between. The unique cuttlefish as well as turtles and sting rays can be seen here quite often. More experienced divers will appreciate the chance to get close up to mandarin fish, frog fish and ghost pipe fish. With its combination of shallow plateaus and steep slopes this little treasure island is a regular stop over during our Open Water Diver Courses and experienced diver programs.

MATAKING ISLAND:
Mataking Island actually consists of two islands only separated at high tide by a long sand bank. The islands of Mataking are just north of Boheyan and became famous in 1998 when a Scandinavian film crew stayed on the islands for several month to produce a "Robinson" TV series. The islands have a magnificent white sandy beach with swaying coconut trees. Both islands are surrounded by a large, very long coral reef that slopes from knee deep to about 80m. Groupers and large trevallys, schools of barracudas and lots of spotted rays can be seen at the various dive sites around here. We also have discovered a plateau in 30m depth where grey reef sharks, whitetip sharks, nurse sharks, even hammerheads, and large eagle rays can be observed whenever the current gets really strong..

POM-POM ISLAND:
Pom-Pom Island is a recently discovered dive location, and a spectacular wall dive has just been discovered there. There were numerous hollows and crannies to explore, which were teeming with creatures like painted spiney lobsters and not to mention the lovely nudibranchs and gobies.

TIMBA-TIMBA ISLAND:
Timba- Timba Island is known for its beautiful beaches, which are ideal for spotting rare marine life such as large cuttlefish, frog fish, crab, sea snakes, and sometimes nurse sharks hiding under table coral. Other common sightings besides turtles include blue ribbon eels, moray eels, barracudas, lobster, large coral trout, and snappers.

Other common sightings besides turtles include blue ribbon eels, moray eels, barracudas, lobster, large coral trout, and snappers.

MABUL ISLAND:
Mabul Island, just 20 minutes north of Sipadan Island and the last island still on the Borneo shelf before the ocean floor drops to some 800m, has been named in many diving magazines for it's popularity amongst macro photographers who look for the really rare creatures. Multicolored nudibranches, flamboyant cuttlefish, large anglerfish, seahorses, blue ribbon eel, ghost pipefish, blue ring octopus and many more are waiting to be discovered at the 8 dive spots around Mabul. Those who went to all these sites already also have a choice to combine dives at Mabul with a short hop to Kapalai, just about 10min from Mabul where more dive sites wait to be discovered.

KAPALAI SPOT:
Kapalai, at the edge of the Ligitan Reef, has been little more than a sand bank, until the construction of Sipadan-Kapalai Resort. The resort activities have prevented fisherman from intruding and thus boosted the number of fish greatly. It‘s shallow reef on the protected north end, sloping from just beneath the surface to appr. 20m, is teeming with fish life in all colors, and the sharp eyes of our dedicated divemasters can help you to spot such incredible critters like clown frogfish, mandarin fish, nudibraches, flambuoyant cuttlefish, mantis shrimp to name but a few. At the southern end of the reef a slope runs down to just about 12m where a long but narrow sandy area is a favorite hiding place for sting rays and turtles can be found resting at coral formations to both sides. By venturing further out to the deep end sightings of whitetip reef sharks are also common. Kapalai can be reached from Semporna within appr. 40 mins.
